The MkDocs Material Theme & Dropdowns in the Main Nav

I love using the MkDocs Material theme, but there is one potential showstopper I ran into last week. The theme developer doesn't currently support dropdown menus in the main nav.

Although I can understand and appreciate his thoughtful commentary on this issue, it may keep me from using the theme for work. Most of my company's helpsite visitors are on desktop, and dropdowns are still very much in use on those screens. This is why a mobile-first approach is not always the right fit.

I've been doing quite a bit of digging into the theme to investigate workarounds. I think I have a solution but will need to play around with it. I'll follow up on this in a future post.
